It is a rainy day. I wish that true fall weather was here to stay. Due to the rain, I came home early from work and had some time to scribble a few things on here. I am expectant, y’all. No, not “expecting,” but expectant. Expectant for the next three months in our marriage life. As day-planner people that we are, Ruthie and I look forward to many things, and I am excited. But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. Let’s live in the moment.
Here we are, mid-September, and it seems like everything fell into place nicely today. Is it a coincidence that last week Ruthie and I planned a date night tonight? Could it be a coincidence that Ruthie’s last day at her current job falls on the day that our Groupons to Studio Movie Grill expire? Could it be a coincidence that I received a mailed gift card a few days ago with enough money to take my wife out? Could it be…?
Well, tonight, we will celebrate! Celebrate our love. Celebrate our life. Celebrate our dreams. Celebrate every blessing we have. In the Providence of God, it seems that things fall into place in our least expected time. Tonight is one of those times. So, let me get ready before we go… celebrate!
Since the beginning of our marriage, Ruthie and I have committed to hold to some priorities. One of them is to care for our marriage by taking a break from work. I work as a minister and also in the “secular” field while Ruthie is a part-time graphic designer at a company and works on her two side businesses on the off days. After a few months of the same routine, it serves us well to dedicate a few days of rest and relaxation. Because we value our relationship, we strive to do this.
So, every 4 months, we take a weekend off. As a minister, I work almost always every day and on the weekends. Like the sprinter at the Olympic races that practices daily for 8 seconds on the racetrack every 4 years, I prepare my sermons, study and pray daily for what will happen for 3 hours in the midst of a faithful congregation that meets every week on Sundays.
April 1st was our first weekend getaway. We went to Kemah and Galveston. It did our souls some good! This weekend we will do it again! After 16 weeks of preaching, I am glad I can rest a bit from the work that God has called me to. I will miss our church and when I come back to the pulpit the following week, I will feel like an eternity has passed, but I will be refreshed, well rested and ready to serve them well for the next 4 months.
My wife will be turning off my phone (hers, too), logging me off social media sites (hers, as well) and we will be enjoying the company of each other. We are excited to spend some time in the largest waterpark in the world, Schlitterbahn (70 acres) and in an awesome city, San Antonio, Tx! Rest assured, Ruthie will be taking lots of pictures and will be posting them sometime when we get back! Goodbye Houston. Hello Weekend Getaway!
…and like I tell our church volunteers, “hold the fort!”
Tony (and Ruthie)
Today’s post won’t hardly be about us, but I’ll just let you know – we’re doing great! God is good, all the time, and we are thankful for what he’s doing, all the time.
I’m not sure where you live but we live in Texas and let’s just say it is already TOO hot outside. One of our favorite salads to make when it’s “TOO” hot out is a salad I learned from my Mother, which has no name but you can’t even name it – it’s just that good.
I hope you try and make it and enjoy it!
2 broccoli bunches
1/2 cup sunflower seeds-salted (no-shell)
1 lb grapes
1 cup Helman’s mayonnaise
1 tsp. Splenda
Cut broccoli in small pieces (thumb-size is perfect!)
Cut grapes at least in half
Mix broccoli, grapes, sunflower seeds
Mix well with Splenda
Put it in the fridge for 1/2 hour to chill
Now, serve and enjoy! Happy first week of Summer. 🙂
Today, Ruthie and I “turn” 6 months old of married life. What bliss. What joy. What peace.
Over a spaghetti dinner that she cooked, I commented that these last 6 months have been simply amazing. Then, we thought, what about those moments that we have had frustration or small misunderstandings? Yes, what about those times that we woke up in not such a great mood? These questions made us reflect a bit and then had us conclude that this marriage thing, this relationship of husband and wife, this union of man and wife, is the way we see sweeter joy, awesome wonder, and makes for more hilarity when we triumph over these trivial things.
The joy is much sweeter when we overcome challenges, bad moods, and the occasional burnt sausages for breakfast. The wonder becomes more awesome when we both can smile and see God work through difficult times of lack. The amusement is more hilarious when we can laugh out loud at each other when we do something silly that was not meant to be seen by the other person. A face, a dance step, the nonstop use (and abuse) of the washing machine because I like to wash clothes excessively. Yes, hilarity at its best!
The small difficulties of our young marriage has made us appreciate the “peace after the storm.”
In memory of our 6 month old married life, I leave you with our wedding video. I just watched it with my bride and it reminded us of vows, family, friends, unity… and delicious food!
Today has been quite a Saturday! It started off great with me being able to sleep in till 10am, I can’t complain. 🙂 After that I decided it definitely had to be a “get things done” kind of Saturday. Since it’s Memorial Day weekend I actually have quite a few days off and know it tends to make me not want to get things done until my last free day but I think this year I’ll change it up and start early so I can enjoy the rest of my weekend without having that over my head.
You never really know how much stuff you begin to accumulate until you clean! And in all actuality this Spring cleaning started two weeks ago when I noticed my crafts closet was ridiculously overflowing and in need of shelves. I looked for shelves at thrift stores and online but couldn’t find one that would fit in my closet or was sturdy enough. So, last week my sweet husband surprised me with a new shelf from Ikea! The shelf fits perfectly and my baskets work great with it, apparently I can even add more shelves to it (don’t mind if I do).
Currently, my home is smelling like vanilla cream candles, clean laundry and a hot shower is waiting for me, I am about to get ready for my hot date! Please enjoy your weekend… I know I will. 🙂
